A classic tale of hope, friendship and family, Annie lights up the Princess Theatre
The Princess Theatre has brought red-headed girl and her orphan friends to Melbourne in the ever-popular Broadway musical Annie.
Directed by Karen Johnston Mortimer and choregraphed by Mitchell Woodcock, this Broadway classic opened on July 10 to outstanding reviews, maintaining its reputation as one of the most beloved and awarded musicals of all time.
The iconic score, featuring popular tracks such as It’s the Hard Knock Life and Tomorrow, will continue to fill the Princess Theatre until November.
Step into the world of orphan Annie, who never lets her life of “hard knocks” get her down.
“It’s a feel-good story, full of hope,” Debora Kirzack said. Deborah plays Miss Hannigan, the authoritarian head of the orphanage.
“We want the audience to leave with a spring in their step and feeling like no matter what problems they are facing, there is light at the end of the tunnel,” she said. The cast includes some big names in the musical theatre world. Anthony Warlow returns as Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks, the role he has played twice previously in Australia to great acclaim.
The iconic role of young orphan girl Annie went to three performers – Dakota Chanel, Isabella Hayden and Lilleth McIntosh – described by producer John Frost as “talented young actors who have big futures ahead of them.”
Deborah described the opening night as “electric,” followed by sold-out shows and amazing reviews, living up to Annie’s long history of success.

“It’s been amazing, the audiences are loving the show in the Princess Theatre. It’s so big, but there’s an intimacy about it. The comedy lands well, and the truth and heart of the story is beautifully conveyed,” she said.
“Annie really resonates with people. Most people leave singing ‘tomorrow, tomorrow, the sun will come out, tomorrow’, feeling more positive than when they walked in and more able to deal with the challenges that life throws at them.”
Annie will play at the Princess Theatre until November 8.
