Craft’s final exhibition of 2024 celebrates the narratives behind objects and art

Craft Victoria is bringing internationally renowned Australian interior decorator, Simone Haag, on board as curator for its final exhibition of 2024.

Entitled Fables & Folklore, the exhibition will explore the narratives imbued in objects and art.

Ms Haag, who is making her debut as a gallery curator, described the exhibition as “a captivating exploration of storytelling through design”.

“This collection highlights the enduring function of narratives in human culture,” she said.

By honouring both the skill inherent in these creations and the rich tapestry of myths and tales, it reaffirms our collective desire to mould our surroundings and connect with our shared history.

Featuring more than 30 Australian artists – many of whom will be exhibiting at Craft for the first time – the exhibition includes works in the mediums of furniture, textiles, ceramics, beading and lighting.

Drew Abrahamson, a self-taught designer from Adelaide, is one of the featured artists.

A proud member of the queer community, Mr Abrahamson describes the ingredients of his art as “hedonism, the fabulous [and] Earth’s natural wonders”.

His work has garnered international recognition and praise.

Mr Abrahamson will exhibit a piece of furniture in Fables & Folklore. Entitled Lignum Sanctum, the work is described as a “hedonistic ode to the opulence of ancient mythology” as well as “a love letter to [Mr Abrahamson’s] community, stamped and travelled with a unified protest and a waving flag of flamboyant deliverance”.

Craft Victoria said the exhibition would appeal to both seasoned collectors and design enthusiasts.

“As an instinctual curator, this exhibition shows Ms Haag at her best,” Craft Victoria’s executive director Nicole Durling said.

We are delighted to welcome Simone to take the reins as curator and introduce our audiences to highly collectable artists working in contemporary craft practice.

Fables & Folklore opens on November 14 and will run until January 25.

Craft’s gallery can be found on Watson Pl, just off Flinders Lane. Entry is free. •
