Greenline info hub launches native green gables

Melbourne’s rooves could be looking at a greener future thanks to a study under way atop a new information hub near Federation Square.

The new centre located alongside the Princes Walk to Birrarung Marr houses information about the City of Melbourne’s Greenline project.

In keeping with the nature-based urban landscape principles at the heart of Greenline, the centre has been capped with a green roof of mostly native plants.

“Our approach was to create a sustainable, beautiful green roof that not only meets the technical requirements but also supports biodiversity and offers a unique environment for native plant species,” roof designer and Evergreen Infrastructure director Michael Casey said.

The green roof is projected to improve surrounding air quality, while the inclusion of mostly native plants will support local wildlife and the overall health of the urban ecosystem.

It will also form part of a three-year data gathering project on the performance of native plants in green roof environments to be shared across the urban design and green infrastructure sectors.

“The information hub will be a fantastic, central resource for the community to learn more about the Greenline Project and the benefits it will bring to the city,” City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Nick Reece said.

The $316 million Greenline project was launched in 2023 and will see major redesigns and greening along the northern Yarra Riverfront precincts from Birrarung Marr to Saltwater Wharf in Docklands.

It will include four kilometres of interconnected promenades, parks, open spaces and cultural precincts, eventually forming Melbourne’s largest green space.

The Greenline information hub is open Wednesdays through Friday between 12pm and 2pm.
