One of Melbourne’s most iconic CBD pubs is set to relaunch this winter with a bold new identity and four-level transformation.

Formerly known as The Crafty Squire, the venue at 127 Russell St will reopen as Hickens Hotel, reviving its original 19th century name and delivering a $6.5 million overhaul designed to reimagine the pub experience for a modern city crowd.

Located on the corner of Russell and Little Collins streets, Hickens Hotel will offer four distinct levels of hospitality, from laid-back lounges and dining to a rooftop bar with city views.

It’s a bold new chapter for the 160-year-old site, blending historic charm with contemporary flair, and positioning itself as a versatile social hub for all occasions.

The venue’s reinvention will also feature a national first: Australia’s first Carlton Draught bar, created in partnership with the iconic Victorian beer brand.

Dubbed The Carlton Lounge, the ground floor bar will serve Brewery Fresh Carlton Draught straight from gleaming copper tanks in a retro-inspired rumpus room setting – complete with pool tables, social seating, and vintage memorabilia.

“This venue is more than just a bar – it’s a tribute to Melbourne’s rich brewing heritage,” said David Stingl, sales director of Asahi Beverages, which owns Carlton Draught.

“We’re excited for our iconic lineup to have its own home at Hickens Hotel. And yes, we’ll be pouring the freshest Carlton Draught, just as it should be.”

The venue’s new name honours its original 1870s title, Hickens Hotel, named after the building’s former landlord and prizefighter, Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken. The design pays tribute to this heritage with subtle nods throughout the space.

“Hickens will be the spot to go to in the city,” venue manager Giuseppe Lacava said. “We’ve dialled in on what makes a pub great and matched it with a nostalgic and playful personality. There’s something for everyone – whether it’s Friday rooftop drinks, watching the footy, or a casual dinner with friends.”

On level one, guests can expect an approachable restaurant, bar and terrace perfect for relaxed meals and mid-week gatherings. Level two has been designed with sports fans in mind, offering a high-energy space featuring large LED screens, arcade games and booth seating to catch every big moment live and loud.

At the top, a new rooftop bar will serve cocktails with sweeping inner-city views – ideal for golden hour drinks, private functions or weekend celebrations.

From after-work knockoffs to major sporting events, Hickens Hotel aims to become a go-to destination in Melbourne’s CBD. The reopening also adds to the revitalisation of the city’s post-pandemic hospitality scene, reactivating a well-known corner of Russell St with a fresh and dynamic offering. Venue hire is also now available for bookings.
