Major retailers filling up Metro Tunnel’s stations
The Metro Tunnel’s new train stations won’t just get you from A to B, they’ll also be making sure you’re properly fuelled with a coffee or a snack.
When the five new stations open across Melbourne in 2025, they’ll include around 30 shops, with many retailers already signed up for a space.
Supermarket IGA, People’s Coffee and international brands Starbucks, KFC and 7-Eleven are among some of the businesses that will be available at the five new stations.
The shops will be both above ground and below, including a kiosk on the tram platform at Anzac Station, and a row of shops along the underpass that will allow people to cross under Royal Parade at Parkville Station.
Except for the spaces on the lower level of State Library Station, people will be able to access the shops without touching on their Myki.
The Metro Tunnel is the biggest upgrade of Melbourne’s train network since the City Loop opened in 1981.
The project will double the size of Melbourne’s underground rail network as we move towards becoming Australia’s biggest city.
Construction on three of the five new stations – Arden, Parkville and Anzac on St Kilda Road – is already complete, and the project team is now testing the tunnels’ new technology and systems.
The Metro Tunnel will connect the busy Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines via twin nine-kilometre tunnels under the city, creating an end-to-end rail line from Melbourne’s northwest to the south-east, better connecting all Victorians to jobs, healthcare and education.
The project includes five new stations – Arden, Parkville, State Library, Town Hall and Anzac – and a next-generation signalling system to deliver a turn-up-and-go network.
The Metro Tunnel will give all Victorians more ways to move around Melbourne with new connections and more choice, giving passengers a direct train connection to St Kilda Road and Parkville for the first time.
The two new CBD stations will mean passengers will be able to switch seamlessly between Metro Tunnel and City Lopp services by transferring at State Library Station (to Melbourne Central Sation) or Town Hall Station (to Flinders Street Station).
