Miss Gunn’s: A hidden gem beneath Flinders Street Station
Miss Gunn’s, an intimate basement bar, officially opened its doors on February 13, offering a unique blend of history, elegance, and modern indulgence.
Named after Ada May Gunn, better known as “Miss Gunn” or “Dolly”, this hidden bar revives the legacy of a pioneering woman who once ran The Loungers’ Club beneath the station in the early 1900s.
Much like its namesake, Miss Gunn’s provides a sanctuary from the city’s hustle and bustle, presenting patrons with a sophisticated and welcoming atmosphere that feels both timeless and mysterious.
“As you enter, you are surrounded by the original foundations of the 1909 Flinders Street [Station] build. The space tells the story of Miss Gunn, transporting you back in time with exposed bluestone and bricks from the original structure,” chief operating officer of Doxa Community Club Anthony Simioni said.
“With this addition, we are enhancing our offering to members and guests, creating a space that blends Melbourne’s rich history with a sophisticated and welcoming experience.”
The venue is housed in a rediscovered basement of Flinders Street Station, a space that had long been forgotten and is rumoured to have once served as a morgue.
Designed by Studio Nine Architects and built by Basis Group, the space showcases the station’s original 1909 bluestone foundations and brickwork, maintaining a connection to Melbourne’s past while delivering modern comforts.
Miss Gunn’s offers more than just a place to grab a drink – it’s an experience. Tailored for professionals, tourists, and eventgoers, it provides the perfect setting for a pre- or post-event drink.
The venue is also available for private functions, providing an intimate and exclusive atmosphere right in Melbourne’s CBD.
The bar menu features an intriguing selection of cocktails inspired by Miss Gunn’s era, including the signature “Dolly” (Husk spiced rum, lemon juice, blueberry oleo, and blueberry yogurt), and “Distant Memories” (Never Never gin, Yellow Chartreuse, rhubarb stew, and lemon juice).
The food menu complements the drinks, with dishes like beef cheek croquettes, steak and frites, and an indulgent oven-baked brie with fig jam.
While reservations are welcomed, walk-ins will also be accommodated, making this a must-visit venue for those seeking a sophisticated and historical experience in the heart of Melbourne.
Miss Gunn’s is open Thursdays from 4pm to 11pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 4pm to 1am. •
