Protesters disrupt opening of Myer Christmas windows
A group of pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted the unveiling of Myer’s annual Christmas windows on November 17, with Premier Jacinta Allan condemning the individuals as “morons”.
Although reports suggest the protest was largely peaceful, the state government has criticised those involved for tarnishing one of Melbourne’s most anticipated holiday traditions.
“We may all be from different backgrounds and faiths, but we are united Victorians. We are united against division and hate,” Premier Allan said at a press conference on November 15.
“We send a message today to anyone who wants to spread hate and division here in the City of Melbourne – there is no place for you, there is no place for this behaviour.”
In response to reports that protesters planned to disrupt the event, Myer scaled back the celebrations, with a smaller crowd present for the reveal of this year’s Australia Zoo-themed windows.
Despite the adjustments, several protesters still attended, chanting slogans such as “bombs are dropping, while you’re shopping,” and holding signs that read, “you look stupid staring at windows when kids are being murdered”.
Despite the disruption, some locals who attended the unveiling said the protest didn’t completely spoil the event, with many still able to enjoy the new windows, which also include a tribute to the Irwin family.
“Celebrating overconsumption while the historic birthplace of Jesus is under bombardment is abhorrent,” protest organiser Amy Settal said in a statement.
“This protest was always going to be peaceful and non-violent,” she said. “The intention was to interrupt the media spectacle and economic gain sought by Myer.” •
