Chief Commissioner active in CBD arrest

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush took a hands-on role in a CBD arrest on Wednesday, July 15, police said, when he happened to be driving by a man carrying a chisel who was being chased by officers.

Patrolling officers had arrived on Queen St just after 6am on Wednesday after a caller to Triple Zero reported that someone was armed with a knife, police said.

After the man failed to comply with their requests the officers tasered him, but he escaped, running off down Collins St.

Chief Commissioner Bush, who was driving to work with his security officer, spotted him running from the officers and got out of the car to restrain him, police said.

The man had thrown the chisel he was carrying before being restrained by the Chief Commissioner.

CCP Bush was then assisted in handling him by the security officer and other police.

The 32-year-old, from Brunswick, was taken to hospital for assessment.

The chisel was retrieved by police and the investigation into the incident was ongoing, they said.

No-one had been injured during the arrest.
