Melbourne’s largest Diwali celebration returns to Marvel Stadium Square
This October, Melbourne will once again be illuminated as the city’s largest Diwali celebration returns to Marvel Stadium Square.
On Saturday, October 11, more than 25,000 people are expected to gather for a day of vibrant performances, authentic cuisine, cultural showcases, and family-friendly festivities at Melbourne Diwali (MD25).
The event was launched by Deputy Lord Mayor Roshena Campbell at the RACV Club on Bourke St on Thursday, September 11.
The free, all-ages event has become one of the city’s fastest-growing cultural festivals, reflecting the strength and diversity of Melbourne’s Indian community – now more than 150,000 strong. For organisers, the festival is about more than tradition; it’s about creating a welcoming, inclusive space where people from every background can join in the spirit of togetherness.
“Melbourne Diwali is more than a festival – it’s a proud celebration of community achievement and partnership,” CEO Anna Bhardwaj said. “This year’s theme – Happy Melbourne Diwali – stands for pride in our city, joy in our cultures, and confidence in our shared future.”
From 2pm to 10pm, Marvel Stadium Square will come alive with more than 600 performers and over 200 businesses showcasing food, arts, and community initiatives. The program includes dance showcases across junior, intermediate, and senior groups, live music, cultural exhibitions, and giveaways. Cricket rivals the Melbourne Stars and Renegades will also team up for special kids’ activities, proving that sport, business, and Bollywood can share the same stage.
“Nowhere else brings together cricket, footy, Bollywood, and business in one vibrant day,” Ms Bhardwaj said.
On October 11, let’s show the world how Melbourne lights up Diwali – together in unity and true community spirit.

Organisers say this year’s event has doubled in scale, thanks to a growing volunteer base and strong support from local partners.
“We’re proud to have expanded from 80 to over 200 businesses this year, welcoming more than 200 stallholders and 150-plus performance groups. It’s proof of our city’s entrepreneurship and cultural talent,” Ms Bhardwaj said.
For attendees, comfort is guaranteed. With Marvel Stadium’s undercover venue, guests can dress in their finest traditional attire without worrying about Melbourne’s unpredictable weather. Vegetarian-friendly food stalls, alcohol-free festivities, and accessible facilities ensure the festival is open to all.
“After a few unsettled years, we accelerated growth and doubled our impact, setting new benchmarks for Melbourne’s festival scene,” Ms Bhardwaj said. “Our volunteer force grows every week – people from every walk of life join us to help Melbourne shine.”
Entry to the event is free, with reserved tickets available for an enhanced experience. Visitors are encouraged to use public transport, with Southern Cross Station just minutes away and multiple tram routes servicing the precinct.
As the sun sets over Docklands, the evening will conclude with a grand finale of music, dance, and light – symbolising Diwali’s timeless message of hope and renewal.
“Melbourne Diwali is a festival for everyone,” Ms Bhardwaj said. “It doesn’t matter how much you know or where you come from – what matters is that we come together in the spirit of Diwali.”
