“Political party games”: 2023 through the eyes of Australia’s cartoonists

An upcoming Melbourne exhibition is set to showcase the work of Australia’s best political cartoonists and provide an insightful retrospective to the year that was 2023.

Behind the Lines 2023: All Fun and Games will be the latest iteration of the nation’s eminent cartoon display, which has been held annually since 2011.

The exhibition will celebrate artwork from some of the biggest moments of Australian democracy, including the Indigenous Voice Referendum and the coronation of King Charles III.

It will also celebrate some of the country’s proudest moments, including the Matildas’ historic run at the World Cup.

Behind the Lines will feature work from Fiona Katauskas – 2023 Political Cartoonist of the Year who is currently employed at The Guardian. The Sydney-based illustrator initially embarked on a career in overseas aid and human rights, before focusing on creative pursuits full time in 1997.

Director of the Museum of Australian Democracy Stephanie Bull said that the political cartoons were able to “inspire audiences” and compel them to “participate as engaged citizens”.

She said that the exhibition would look to “encourage discussion” and make politics “fun and accessible” for people from all walks of life.

Behind the Lines 2023: All Fun and Games will run from March 24 until May 24 at the Old Treasury Building on Spring St. Admission is free. •
