Queen Victoria Market’s much-anticipated Hawker 88 Night Market has returned, and if the opening night is anything to go by, the next four weeks are sure to be exciting.

Inspired by Asian street markets around the world, QVM’s exclusive night market will have lanterns hung up, and long hawker-style share tables for people to come together.

The exclusive five-week season began on Wednesday, April 12 with a ‘Taste of Asia Night’, and featured a number of cultural performances and interactive activities.

There was traditional dragon dancing, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Vietnamese dance groups, interactive Malaysian and Indian dance workshops, and a special appearance from Filipina soul singer Karen Esco.

Each Wednesday night will centre around a different theme, and more than 20 speciality Asian stalls are included within the line-up and ready to serve authentic street food and drinks to visitors.

The weekly themes include:

  • Malaysia Durian Night on Wednesday, April 19 will feature a celebration of the King of Fruit, the Durian, with Malaysian cake making workshops, Malay dancers, lion dancing, and DJ Sikandar.
  • Korea Japan Night on Wednesday, April 26 will include K-pop dancing, Taekwondo demonstrations, Korean and Japanese drumming, and performances from the Samurai Girls.
  • Bollywood Night on Wednesday, May 3 will be a night of lively, colourful Bollywood dancing, and will provide visitors with an opportunity to learn the fun dance style.
  • Island Night on Wednesday, May 10 is the final night of the season and will celebrate the Islands of Asia with Balinese, Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino cultural performances.

Hawker 88 Night Market takes place in K to L shed, from 5pm to 10pm, with free entry.
