Victorian children are being encouraged to swap screens for stories these holidays, with this year’s Big Summer Read officially launched at the City of Melbourne’s newest library at Queen Victoria Market.

Minister for Local Government Nick Staikos visited narrm ngarrgu on November 17 to unveil the statewide reading challenge, now in its fifth year. Designed to combat the “summer slide” – the drop in reading and literacy skills that often occurs over the long break – the program invites all Victorians under 18 to read, log their progress and earn digital badges and prizes.

The launch at the bustling market precinct offered a distinctly local flavour, showcasing how the new library is already becoming a hub for families, learning and community activity in the CBD.

Children can register through the Big Summer Read website, with parents also able to sign up and read aloud to younger participants who aren’t yet independent readers. Four statewide winners will take home a Zoos Victoria family membership, while individual libraries will award additional prizes sourced from local businesses.

Minister Staikos said the program played a critical role in keeping kids engaged.

“We know that young people have a decline in literacy skills over the summer holidays when they’re not engaged in reading, and the Big Summer Read aims to combat this,” he said.

Victorian Public Libraries Ambassador Andrea Rowe encouraged families to make the most of their local library over the hotter months.

“Victorian libraries are a great place to beat the summer heat, and with so many books on offer there’s something for every reader these summer holidays,” she said.

Public Libraries Victoria CEO Dr Angela Savage said the program helped smaller and regional library services connect with young readers who may not otherwise engage in structured reading challenges.

The initiative reinforces the role of public libraries – including one the state’s newest at Queen Victoria Market – as vital community spaces supporting literacy, curiosity and lifelong learning.

The Big Summer Read runs through the school holidays. Families can register at readbooks.com.au/bsr.
