Melbourne has recorded the fastest-growing night-time economy of any Australian capital, with new data showing the city added almost 3000 jobs and nearly 180 venues in just one year.

The latest Measuring the Night-time Economy Report 2026 found Melbourne’s after-dark economy grew strongly between 2024 and 2025, with employment increasing more than six times faster than the national average.

The City of Melbourne said the growth had been fuelled by locals and visitors embracing the city across both weeknights and weekends, with dining, entertainment and major events helping drive activity.

The food sector was the biggest contributor, accounting for 77 per cent of new businesses and creating 2300 jobs. The report also found leisure and entertainment grew at twice the national rate, reflecting changing habits among younger audiences seeking experiences as part of a night out.

While Thursday has become the new Friday in many cities due to hybrid work patterns, Melbourne continues to draw strong crowds across both nights, with almost 60 per cent of core businesses open between 6pm and 9pm.

The city’s late-night culture also remains strong on weekends, with almost half of core businesses staying open past 9pm and through to midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.

Melbourne also recorded some of the strongest after-dark retail activity in the country, with between 40 and 52 per cent of businesses open every weeknight.

In total, the city’s night-time economy generated more than $5.1 billion in sales between 2024 and 2025, the strongest growth rate of any capital city.

Lord Mayor Nick Reece said the figures showed Melbourne’s momentum was continuing.

“Melbourne’s mojo is running red hot at the moment,” Cr Reece said. “Recently, we were named best city in the world, today we're recognised as home to Australia’s fastest-growing night-time economy.”

With almost 180 new venues to choose from and nearly 3000 new jobs being created, this data tells us Melbourne is outpacing all other Australian capitals.

City Economy and Business portfolio head Cr Kevin Louey said the results reflected the efforts of local operators.

“Behind every new venue is a local business owner who has backed Melbourne, taken a risk and helped make our city even more vibrant,” Cr Louey said. “These businesses are the heartbeat of Melbourne after dark.”
